Have you been thinking about getting braces? Maybe you’ve noticed your smile is in need of a little tune-up, or you’re experiencing a lot of pain because of bite misalignment issues.
There are many reasons to get braces, but what is the process of getting them like? This guide shows what to expect during the process of getting braces.
What Is the Process of Getting Braces?
The first step is to go over common treatment options and see what’s best for you. After that, we will schedule an appointment to put the braces on your teeth.
When you get braces, the orthodontist will glue tiny brackets to your teeth. Each tooth will have its own bracket. Your brackets will be either metal or clear, depending on what variety is available.
Once all the brackets have been applied, the next step in the process of getting braces is to attach the archwire. The archwire is the part that does the work of rearranging your teeth.
The archwire runs from one back molar through each bracket and all the way around to the other back molar. The archwire doesn’t actually touch your teeth, it just goes through the brackets.
Once the orthodontist attaches the wire to your top set of teeth, the next step is to do the same process for the bottom set.
If you’re wondering, “How long does it take to get braces?”, the entire process lasts about an hour or two. If you want to break it up into two appointments, that is definitely an option.
Is Getting Braces Painful?
Does it hurt to get braces? Getting braces put on your teeth is not actually painful. The surfaces of your teeth don’t have nerves, so you won’t feel the glue or the brackets being applied.
You will probably feel some pressure and a slight tugging or pulling sensation. However, it’s not at all like getting a shot or needle. There won’t be an “OUCH!” moment.
If anything feels too weird to tolerate, it’s okay to speak up and tell the orthodontist. They will be able to make adjustments so you stay comfortable.
How Long Does It Take to Get Used to Braces?
On average it takes most people around four weeks to get used to their new braces. Don’t worry — after a while, you won’t even notice they’re there!
If your new braces scratch the insides of your mouth at first, you can ask for bracket covers to provide some protection.
You may need to make some minor adjustments to what you eat, but it’s not too complicated. Simple changes are all that’s needed.
For example, when you have braces you should probably shave corn kernels from the cob. If you gnaw directly on the cob it will be easier for the brackets to pull loose.
You’ll also need to brush your teeth and floss a bit differently. Your orthodontist and their staff will show you how to brush so you can clean around the brackets.
It’s a little bit tricky at first, but most people get the hang of it after a few times.
